Then in 1800, the population was up to 19% with 41,084 black residents. 1806 Union Academy, a state-sponsored institution, was chartered for Anderson County. 1820s Union Academy began operations. A wooden structure was built on South Main Street in Clinton. 1860s Union Academy was destroyed by fire during the American Civil War.
